Do you become a little cranky after drinking your morning coffee? That might be a jittery after-coffee symptom. Even coffee lovers are aware of the beverage’s stimulating and occasionally anxiety-inducing adverse effects. Because the effects of caffeine do not last long, we often have another cup.  And then another.  Soon we can surpass our body’s comfort zone and tolerance for caffeine. And it is not hard to do.  Did you know that more than 400 milligrams of caffeine are the maximum that physicians recommend we consume on a daily basis?  You are probably thinking that you could never drink more than 400mg of caffeine.  But a single cup of coffee averages 90mg of caffeine.  So, if you are having five coffees throughout the day, you have reached your maximum threshold.

The problem is that caffeine can come from a variety of sources throughout the day.  You may stop drinking coffee in the morning, and in the afternoon, you may feel like iced coffee or maybe a couple of sodas.  Many people choose zero-sugar sodas, but did you know that they have a higher caffeine content?  For example, a regular can of Coca-Cola has 34mg of caffeine, but a can of Diet Coke has 46mg.  So, a few cups of coffee added to a few servings of soda daily, and it is easy to overload your body with caffeine.

You probably recognize the signs of too much caffeine.  They are a bunch of symptoms that let us know that we have consumed too much.  And even though we may not feel tired right away, there is a trade-off from using caffeine to combat fatigue.   Some of the symptoms of caffeine jitters include:

  • Headaches
  • Shaking hands
  • Accelerated heart rate
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Dehydration

Caffeine isn’t really a solution for fatigue; it is a short-term fix.  After a brief energy burst, people often experience a “caffeine crash.”  And when that happens, you feel just as tired (if not more) than you did before you consumed the caffeine. And since a “crash” in the middle of our workday isn’t ideal, people continue to consume caffeine.   Even though we don’t think of caffeine as addictive, the overconsumption of coffee and other caffeinated beverages is habit-forming.

Coffee jitters can result from consuming too much caffeine in the short term, but long-term effects can be more serious. Over time, the consequences of consuming too much caffeine include elevated levels of stress and anxiety, cardiovascular concerns, and digestive problems.

Although uncommon, caffeine overdose is a possibility. In extreme cases, nausea, fever, dizziness, vomiting, and seizures may be signs of caffeine toxicity or overdose. Caffeine does more than give your body a jolt of energy.  It can cause some unhealthy side effects, including:

  • Increased stomach acid leading to nausea and heartburn.
